The application portal opens on September 1st each year.
Before you begin the application, have the following available:
- Photocopies of your GRE and English proficiency scores
- The GRE is optional and not required.
- English proficiency scores, such as TOEFL or IELTS, are required of international applicants only. We also accept the Pearson Test, and the Duolingo Test.
- CV (or resume)
- Have an electronic copy (.pdf, .doc, .docx, or .txt) of your official transcripts available to upload, as well as, for the GPA and number of credits.
- Contact information, including email, for three letter of recommendation writers
We STRONGLY encourage you to complete your application as soon as possible —November or December being the ideal time. It is beneficial to apply early!

Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of reference on official letterhead stationery are required from research supervisors, faculty instructors and/or advisors. Once you submit your application, an email will be sent to your recommenders. They will be added to your application once they are received.
The list of courses taken and grades received must be presented. International transcripts also need a copy in English. Indian students must furnish detailed marks sheets for each degree. You can attach an electronic copy (.pdf, .doc, .docx, or .txt) of your official transcripts to the application. If that is not an option for you, please send us your official transcripts electronically to email@example.com.
Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)
The Department of Chemistry is waiving the requirement for the General Test scores. If you have completed the exam, you can attach an electronic copy of your score to the application. You may be able to access your scores on line. Please visit www.ets.org for more information.
English Language Test
Non-citizens must take either the TOEFL or IELTS examinations; information about IELTS is available at www.ielts.org. The minimum scores for those are: 89 on the TOEFL iBT (570 by paper) or an IELTS score of 6.5.
We also accept the Pearson Test of English (Academic) and the Duolingo English Test. The minimum scores for those are: 60 for the Pearson and 105 for Duolingo.
The department HIGHLY RECOMMENDS taking the iBT. You can attach an electronic copy of your score to the application. If you took the iBT, you can get a copy of your scores by logging into the ETS web page at www.ets.org and following the links to the TOEFL page.
