Majors and Minors
Why study chemistry at Iowa State?
A bachelor of science or bachelor of arts degree in chemistry from Iowa State will prepare students for careers in the natural sciences and beyond. Students will gain hands-on experience in laboratory and research settings. Our department is well known for having excellent opportunities for undergraduates to get involved with original research during their entire academic journey at Iowa State. Additionally, we have many scholarships available for incoming freshmen as well as for our continuing students. Finally, our Chemistry Learning Community helps incoming freshmen and transfer students get involved with professors, research groups, other chemistry majors, and keeps them involved with fun activities, free food, and professional development activities.

Making Connections
Learning Community
The Chemistry Learning Community (CLC) is a welcoming space where new chemistry students connect, collaborate, and grow together. With research at its core, the CLC offers weekly activities, faculty‑led discussions, and hands‑on experiences that make science come alive. Students gain academic support, explore campus resources, and build friendships through study sessions, field trips, and fun events — all while developing the skills to succeed in chemistry and beyond.
Chemistry Club
The Society of Chemistry Undergraduate Majors Chemistry (SCUM) is a club that brings science to life with dazzling demonstrations, inspiring K–12 students and welcoming future chemists to our campus. Led by undergraduates, we spark curiosity, build community, and show that chemistry is everywhere. Joining the club means you’ll get to share your love of science, meet new friends, and build skills in teaching and leadership — all while having a blast.
Undergraduate Research
Students at Iowa State have the opportunity to conduct original research under the supervision of our excellent research faculty. Students will collaborate with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to learn the skills and techniques required for modern chemistry research. Conducting research as an undergraduate is an excellent opportunity to prepare for graduate studies or a career in the natural sciences. In addition, students can be co-authors in peer-reviewed publications and apply for research awards and recognition.
