Angewandte Chemie

The ISU Department of Chemistry, with the support of its Diversity and Inclusion Committee, condemns the opinion paper by Tomáš Hudlický that was recently accepted, posted online, and - only after a major public outcry - retracted by the eminent chemistry journal, Angewandte Chemie.

The views on the contributions of ALL chemists expressed in this paper are deplorable and cannot be identified with us as chemists.  All available research, along with considerations of social justice and common sense, show that these racist, biased, and troubling views are wrong.  The fact they passed through peer and editorial review in one of the top journals of our profession is profoundly troubling.

We strive to continue making our department a truly welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of gender identity or expression, ethnic or racial background, or socioeconomic status.
