Lola Placeway has been selected as one of the 12 honorees featured in the 2026 Women Impacting ISU Calendar—a special commemorative edition that celebrates women who made significant contributions to Iowa State University prior to the publication of the first calendar. Hired in 1895 as a teaching assistant, Lola quickly distinguished herself through her exceptional organizational and teaching skills. She progressed in her career, earning the title of associate professor in May 1905, and holds the distinction of being the first woman faculty member in the Department of Chemistry. Alongside Alfred A. Bennett, she co-authored General Chemistry and Elementary Qualitative Analysis, the first textbook published by active members of the Chemistry Department. Her legacy continues to inspire generations at ISU.
