How busy can a summer get for a second-year graduate student? Paul Oftedahl from the Zaikina group was pretty busy. First, he attended the 6th US School on Total Scattering Analysis at ORNL to learn multiple approaches to fitting total scattering data, followed by a poster presentation at the Gordon Research Conference and hands-on research experience at the highly competitive Neutron and X-ray Scattering School. All of this while working on his first-author paper that was published in the ACS journal Chemistry of Materials last month. In this paper, Paul documents the discovery, structure, and initial characterization of a novel Kagomé material in the unexplored Mg-Co-B system.
