Current Research: The giant magnetocaloric effect discovered in Gd5Si2Ge2 has triggered extensive research on both structure and magnetic behavior in the RE5X4 systems (X represents main group elements from groups 13-15). In an earlier study, the Gd5GaxGe4-x system was explored for the influence of valance electron count on structure, but challenges remain to distinguish Ga and Ge. What's more, chemical substitutions using Ga or mixed rare-earth metals have uncovered interesting site distribution results and an important enlightening of the structure-property relationships. Therefore, I am working on the structure-property relationships in this kind of materials.
