Understanding Magnetism in Solid State Materials: From Intermetallics to Oxides

In this talk, I will provide an introduction to magnetic materials and what we can learn about these systems using a variety of techniques such as x-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, etc. In particular, I will focus on a family of rare-earth transition metal-based alloys, which is of interest in refrigeration technology. This will be followed by oxide perovskites in which octahedral tilting plays a key role in the observed magnetic behavior. These results will reveal important factors that govern magnetic properties through chemical modifications and establish the correlation between structural and magnetic property relationships.
