"Surface-Mediated Processes in the Environment: Combining Solid-State NMR, Computational Studies, and Cyberinfrastructure"
Abstract
Advanced spectroscopic and computational tools allow fundamental studies of the relationship between structure and function at surfaces in the environment Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one area where recent advances in surface selectivity or overall sensitivity have pushed technological limits, now allowing new analyses of lower surface area materials or insensitive (but important) chemical species in the environment. To provide examples of the power of these techniques, I will present our recent work in detecting reactive species on complex oxide surfaces using solid-state NMR, following the kinetics of neophase formation from the caustic weathering of soil minerals, and the detection of nuclides such as strontium in aluminosilicate systems. These studies are further facilitated through their integration into a new NSF-funded project aimed at producing collaborative cyberinfrastructure tools to promote multi-disciplinary, multi-scale research in environmental molecular sciences.
