Nobel Laureate Dan Shechtman
"The Discovery of Quasi-Periodic Crystals"
Dan Shechtman, an Iowa State professor of materials science and engineering and research scientist for the Ames Laboratory, won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The honor was awarded for his discovery of quasicrystals, crystalline materials with a periodic atomic structure deemed impossible in modern crystallography. Initially controversial, Dr. Shechtman’s findings have changed long-held definitions and ideas about matter and atomic arrangement. He is also the Philip Tobias Professor of Materials Science at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Reception to follow.

"Secret Science of Movie Stunts and Special Effects"
Lights, camera, action!” Why can’t getting kids interested in science be as easy as getting them to watch an action-packed movie? Maybe it can be… From working with Tom Cruise to Tom Hanks to a recent action movie about an orphaned Columbian assassin (not played by a Tom), Steve Wolf knows movie stunts and special effects. His other passion is using his knowledge of science to make learning fun and interesting for students. Join Steve Wolf, author and President of Special FX International, to learn how to use movies to make learning science fun. You may also learn a few secrets behind new and classic movie stunts and special effects. Lights, camera… chemistry! Presenters: Steve Wolf, founder of Science in the Movies and President of Special FX International, is a stunt and special effects expert and an experienced teacher. He has worked on hundreds of movies and TV shows including: ‘The Firm’, ‘The Client,’ ‘The Jungle Book,’ ‘Americas Most Wanted,’ ‘All My Children,’ ‘Cast Away,’ and ‘Hustle and Flow.’ His entertainment clients include Paramount, Disney, Fox, Warner Bros., ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, MTV, HBO, and Discovery. Wolf’s mission is to bring the power of Hollywood quality presentations to bear against pressing educational challenges. “When you make learning as much fun as going to a movie, any subject can be made easy, fun and memorable.” Darren Griffin, PhD is Professor of Genetics at the University of Kent, UK. Previously he was Professor of Genetics at Brunel University. "Measures of Green Chemistry Performance"
One of the major goals of green chemistry is to promote the design and development of more efficient chemistries and chemical synthetic processes. To do this, key green chemistry measures must be established and tools to facilitate chemical, chemistry and process assessment must be developed. Join David Constable as he shares how to systematically measure, compare and evaluate synthetic chemistry routes using key green chemistry metrics. David will also explore the opportunities and challenges encountered in implementing green chemistry concepts within your research and development framework.
Presenter: Dr. Constable until recently was the Corporate VP of Energy, Environment, Safety & Health (EESH) for Lockheed Martin Corporation. Prior to joining Lockheed Martin, he was the Director of Operational Sustainability in the Corporate Environment, Health, and Safety Department at GlaxoSmithKline. David has authored or co-authored more than 28 journal publications and in 2011 co-authored a book on “Green Chemistry & Engineering – A Practical Design Approach.”

"Designer Babies"
“Do you want a boy or a girl?” That question is now only one of many variables soon-to-be parents could choose from. Again, technology takes us to the outer realm where parents no longer have to wish for certain traits, but can plan for them through genetic engineering. Darren Griffin will discuss the pros and cons of genetic screening.
Presenter: Darren Griffin, PhD is Professor of Genetics at the University of Kent, UK. Previously he was Professor of Genetics at Brunel University. In 2002, he was admitted as a fellow of the Society of Biology and in 2008 he was awarded both a fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists and Doctor of Science from the University of Manchester. "Solution Chemical Routes to High-Efficiency Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 Thin-Film Solar Cells"
Abstract: Interest in Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) as a sustainable material for use in thin-film photovoltaics has been increasing rapidly in recent years. We have focused on chemical routes to CZTSSe with the aim to deliver high efficiency while simultaneously employing reagents with attractive scalability and handling characteristics. In this talk, the preparation of CZTSSe thin films from inks will be described. Using this approach we have produced CZTSSe photovoltaic devices with an efficiency of 8.5%.
