Chemical Demonstrations Required Documentation

All chemical demonstrations presented at the 18th BCCE must have the following documents on file in the Iowa State University Chemistry Department by June 8, 2004.

The signed copy of the ACS Division of Chemical Education Guidelines for Presenting Chemical Demonstrations must be mailed or faxed to Paul Hollander, BCCE Chemical Demonstration Chair, Chemistry Department, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011. Telefax 515/294-0105.  The other documents can be mailed or faxed as above or e-mailed to Paul Hollander, pholland@iastate.edu.

1.  Approval from the General Chair, Program Chair, ISU Department of Chemistry Safety Committee, and Chemical Demonstration Chair.  This requires the documentation below.

2.  An abstract of the chemical demonstration submitted and accepted:

a.  A written outline of the procedure for preparing the demonstration.  If the procedure is in Bassam Shakhashiriıs four-volume work, Chemical Demonstrations, a reference to the demonstration number is sufficient.

b. A list of the chemicals accompanied by an MSDS for each chemical. An MSDS is not needed if the chemical is listed on the ISU Chemistry Departmentıs laboratory safety web page.  Its URL is http://avogadro.chem.iastate.edu/MSDS/.

c.  A written statement of the known potential hazards, handling problems, etc. for each demonstration.

d. A written list of the safety equipment needed to be present during the preparation, presentation, and clean-up of the demonstration.

e.  A written plan for disposing of all wastes generated by each demonstration.  Only neutral salts or neutralized acid-base solutions with a measured pH between 6.1 and 8.5 can be poured down a sink.  Other waste must be disposed of through Iowa State Universityıs Environmental Health and Safety program.

f.  A written estimate of the quantity of waste to be generated and a list of the chemicals in the waste, including the approximate percentages of each one.

g. A written statement about how you plan to deal with unused chemicals (excess supplies of chemicals) - you can't just leave unused chemicals at ISU without permission.

3.  A signed form - ACS Division of Chemical Education Guidelines for Presenting Chemical Demonstrations - stating that you agree to these procedures.
